Mom used to fool people with this recipe. Everyone thought this was Pumpkin Pie. No one could tell this difference. It was a tradition from my childhood and when she passed I was so worried I could not make it, but I did and now I carry on the tradition.
After the squash was cooked (boiled) it is put the through the ricer to make sure that there are no lumps.
